A Conversation with Glenn Beck
January 7, 2012
"To his admirers, Glenn Beck has been a voice crying in the wilderness, a prophet who warns us that we have been wandering in darkness too long..." - Lee Harris,
The Weekly Standard
Glenn Beck is an American conservative radio and television host, author, entrepreneur, and political commentator. Millions of viewers and listeners are attracted daily as Beck plays host and star of the nationally syndicated radio talk show, "The Glenn Beck Show."
As the newest member of the Fox News Channel, his news format program, titled "Glenn Beck," launched in January 2009. He made his television debut in May of 2006 on CNN Headline News with his self-titled topical talk show and quickly soared in popularity. In addition, he joined ABC's "Good Morning America" as a regular contributor.
Among his core values, Beck lists personal responsibility, private charity, the right-to-life, freedom of religion, limited government, and family as the cornerstone of society. Beck believes in low national debt, and has said, "A conservative believes that debt creates unhealthy relationships. Everyone, from the government on down, should live within their means and strive for financial independence."
Beck is the founder and CEO of Mercury Radio Arts, a multimedia production company through which he produces content for radio, television, publishing, the state, and the Internet. It was announced on April 6, 2011, that Beck would "transition off of his daily program" on Fox News but would team with Fox to produce projects for FOX News and its digital properties.
Since 2005, he has toured American cities twice a year, presenting a one-man stage show, mixing stand-up comedy and inspirational speaking.
Beck made his radio debut at the age of 13 in Seattle, and grew up in nearby Mount Vernon. After graduating high school, he secured jobs as a Top 40 DJ at stations from Baltimore and Houston to Phoenix and New Haven, CT. Unfortunately, at the age of 30, Beck lost his passion for radio – and everything else – as he was consumed by alcoholism and drug addiction. It was only after coming to terms with his past and remaining sober that his life found a new direction. He found new love, his second wife Tania; religion (he was baptized Mormon), and a new vision of his career, pursuing talk radio.
After his sobriety and life reversal, Beck received an offer to host his own talk radio show on WFLA-AM in Tampa, Florida. Despite inheriting its 18th placed position, his new program landed the #1 position in his first year. Within 18 months, his show was nationally syndicated in January of 2002. "The Glenn Beck Program" debuted on 47 stations. Today, the show is heard on over 300 stations and on XM satellite radio.
In 2008, Beck won the coveted Marconi Radio Award for Network Syndicated Personality of the Year. The award is presented annually by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) to the top radio stations and on-air personalities in the United States. In addition to the success of his radio and television programs, Beck is the author of 6
New York Times bestsellers in separate categories: non-fiction, fiction and children's picture books.
Glenn is married, has 4 children and resides in New Canaan, CT.
